Duke of Edinburgh International Award

BISU will be the first school in Ukraine to offer the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh International Award to students in years 10-12.

What is the Duke of Edinburgh International Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global framework for non-formal education and learning, which challenges young people to dream big, celebrate their achievements and make a difference in their world.

It operates in more than 130 countries and territories, helping to inspire millions of young people. It has never been offered in Ukraine before.

Founded more than 60 years ago, the Award is available to all 14-24-year olds and equips young people with the skills they need for life regardless of their background, culture, physical ability or interests.

Why should students take part?

Beyond academic achievements, universities want to see evidence of so called ‘soft skills’ that students have developed through extra-curricular activities, such as communication, commitment, leadership and teamwork.

Achieving an Award will give students skills, confidence and an edge over others when you apply for college, university or a job.

Students also make a difference to other people’s lives and their community, become fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last a lifetime.

Participants say that doing their DofE gives them character traits like confidence and resilience, that can boost their mental health and wellbeing and help them face and overcome personal challenges.

What components make up the award?

  • Physical recreation: students improve their health and fitness.
  • Skills: students develop their personal interests, hobbies, and social skills.
  • Service: students volunteer in the community and help those less fortunate.

Each component must be done for a minimum of 3 months, with one component of the student’s choice done for 6 months.

The Adventurous Journey: a 2 day hike, and 1 night camping in the wilderness as part of a team. Students are trained on outdoor survival skills and complete the hike without adult intervention in the countryside of Ukraine.
