MoreOn 26th July 2023, we hosted the Unbreakable Year Event, a special occasion that brought together our students, graduates, teachers, parents and the entire BISU community.
This event respectfully commemorated the resilience and achievements of our students, staff and families throughout this highly challenging academic year, and could be seen as an expression as a dignified defiance against russia’s aggression.
The Unbreakable Year Event combined both physical and online participation. The attendees had the option to attend either in person at the school or join the event online from home. This approach allowed everyone to participate, irrespective of their location or circumstances. We commenced our event by observing a minute of silence to pay tribute to all Ukrainians who lost their lives due to the armed aggression of the russian federation.
Mr David Cole, BISU Principal said: “This has been a year like no other. Ukraine and its community will continue unbroken and welcome a certain victory when it comes. So, this is a commemoration, and we respect the sufferings of so many, it is not inappropriate to also see it as a celebration for our students and the time when they can enjoy their successes. Their generation was already given up so much, they have the right not to have their lives dictated by the war but enjoy the same moments of joint celebration as any other child or an adult.”
Mr Olga Zastavna, Founder and Chair of BISU commented: “During challenging times of growth and trials since our establishment in 1997, we never imagined that we would be teaching children amidst war. However, to BISU’s credit, we proudly declare that our school remained the only international institution operating throughout this year, ensuring continuous learning despite the difficult circumstances. With unity and determination, we have embraced and continue to uphold our values. Our commitment to international education in Ukraine and British traditions remains steadfast and unwavering.”
Ms Veronika Efimenko, Head of BISU in Dnipro: “I want to express my gratitude to our students who are living through an immensely challenging and crucial period for our country. At this very moment, we are fighting for our freedom and independence. Despite the hardships, you unwaveringly craft beauty and spread joy. Our most precious achievement is preserving our hope for Ukraine’s victory and a bright, peaceful future. Among our accomplishments is obtaining the certificate of education.”
Heads of BISU in Kyiv, Mrs. Galina Sava and Mrs. Natalia Kravchenko also extended their heartfelt congratulations to our graduates on successfully completing the year. They expressed their sincere wishes that each graduate discovers their own path in life and attains remarkable accomplishments.
Following their speeches, the Certificate-Award Ceremony took place, where our students from both schools in Dnipro and Kyiv were honored with Ukrainian certificates for basic and complete secondary education.
Three of our secondary students were recognised with COBIS Student Achievement Awards for demonstrating remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.
Additionally, we extended our appreciation and honours to the Ukrainian Curriculum teachers and to those who successfully completed the International Support Teacher Programme.
The event was enriched with video and in-person greetings, heartfelt messages, and inspiring stories from BISU students and parents. To conclude the celebration, everyone enjoyed a delightful festive cake.
To the graduating class, we extend our best wishes for success and fulfillment in their future careers or academic endeavors. We firmly believe that the knowledge our students have gained at BISU will empower them to contribute to the development of a peaceful and enlightened nation. For those who will be continuing their learning path at BISU, we eagerly look forward to welcoming them back next year.
