Ukraine: How you can help
MoreUkrainian Orphans Celebrate Christmas with hosting American families
Valentyna Hladyshko, a BISU assistant teacher (Nivki school), took part in an incredibly special charity initiative.
This initiative is organised by US-based Force for Christ Orphan Outreach (FFC) that serves orphans internationally. They pair orphans with host families and bring them over to the United States for either four weeks in the summer or in the winter, so that children can experience the acceptance, guidance and love given by a hosting family during those times. Service for Children and Families (the Kyiv Regional State Administration) is the Ukrainian partner of the project.
Valentyna Hladyshko’s task was to accompany children on their trip overseas, help them accommodate and provide communication assistance in case any misunderstanding arose.
Valentyna says, “Some children were not ‘freshmen’; it was not the first time they stayed within a hosting family. They could speak English and independently communicate with families. For some children, it was a brand-new experience as they were immediately immersed into an English language environment”.
Even from scratch, Ukrainian children would start speaking fluent English in no time.
Being an orphan is a tragedy in life, moreso, when you get orphaned at a younger age. Of course, orphan children would love nothing more than to come to an atmosphere of love and joy, and really have fun over the holidays.
However, not only are their emotional needs being met but hosting also serves a practical purpose. If you are an orphan and you gain some English-language skills, that alone drastically enhances your prospects for employment and future viability.
Liz Stoumbos, FFC founder says, “Our goals of the program are for the orphans to have the experience of living in a living, nurturing family, learn English, have a cultural experience and learn about Christ. The families enjoy meeting needs of the children and often send back many needed supplies to the orphanages. They also enjoy learning about the Ukrainian culture and learning a new language. We love to see how play and love are not hindered due to language and cultural barriers.”
Valentyna says, “This initiative helps children look at their life from a different angle. They come to realise that the world can offer them numerous opportunities to choose from. Living with families has a significant impact upon their mindset. They look happier, relaxed and confident. One can see a huge difference between ‘before and after’.”
It’s a force for change in the lives of the orphans, but also for their host families. Some of host American families have already adopted or are seeking adoption for those kids.
Liz adds, “Families really enjoy having the kids for Christmas as they are able to share the Christmas story of Jesus and the hope that He brings. It truly is a magical time for the kids and families”.
