The education system in the United Kingdom is considered one of the best in the world and a benchmark for many countries, including European ones. Its main distinguishing feature is its strict adherence to standards and requirements for the quality of education. It has a clear structure and commitment to traditions, into which innovations are harmoniously integrated. Below is more detailed information about the features of British education, particularly with regard to education for foreign students.
The first thing to know is that the education system in the UK consists of public and private sectors. The vast majority of educational institutions are regulated by the state. However, there are also private day schools and colleges, including international ones, offering various study programmes. Boarding schools are a separate category, including public schools — elite private educational institutions where students are prepared for admission to higher education institutions and subsequent leadership positions at the state level (economy, politics, church, army). In general, the entire education system, regardless of whether it is a private school or a state school, has its own structure. Within this structure, there are clearly defined levels of education in the United Kingdom.
Pre-school education
Almost all British children receive pre-school education in various municipal and private institutions. These can be:
These institutions educate children aged from a few months to 5 years. Next comes school education.
This is the first stage of secondary education, covering children aged 5 to 11. This period is also divided into two stages:
Any British school for children at the primary level provides instruction in the core subjects. Initially, these are English, mathematics and literature. A little later, natural sciences, technology and humanities are added – a total of about ten subjects. However, the main focus of primary school education is on general personal development and communication skills, as well as sports.
Children aged 11 to 16 attend secondary school. This period also consists of two stages, but the goal of each is to prepare for exams:
After completing secondary school, students have the right to choose their next path. This can be employment, vocational training (college) or preparation for higher education.
All education that students receive after completing secondary school is called Further Education. This includes vocational training in colleges, preparatory programmes for admission to higher education institutions and direct higher education (bachelor’s, master’s, postgraduate, MBA programmes), as well as postgraduate education.
This is a preparatory educational programme that involves studying several specialised subjects (usually 3-4) that are necessary for further study at a university in the desired profession. The programme lasts 2 years (from 16 to 18 years old). Based on their exam results, students are eligible to apply to universities not only in the United Kingdom, but also in many other countries. Moreover, passing A-Level is mandatory for foreign applicants who wish to study at universities in the United Kingdom, as well as for anyone planning to enter Oxford, Cambridge or a medical university.
When it comes to international education formats, it is also worth mentioning preparatory programmes such as:
It is important to note that the first qualification opens the door to universities around the world, while the second and third are designed for foreign students to obtain higher education directly in the UK.
Higher education in the UK can be obtained at the following levels:
There are also MBA (Master of Business Administration) programmes with various formats, from intensive to distance learning. They are designed to train international-level specialists for management positions in various fields (finance, marketing, business, etc.).
It is also important for foreign applicants to note that passing the UKVI IELTS international exam to confirm a high level of English proficiency is a prerequisite for admission to a UK university. You can also improve your knowledge through special programmes lasting from 1 month to 1 year, such as Pre-Masters, English for Postgraduate Study or Pre-Sessional (for those who have already been admitted to a university but have not confirmed a sufficient level of English).
There are also programmes such as Diploma and Graduate Diploma. The first allows you to transfer to a British university after the first year of a Ukrainian university and continue your studies in the next year. The second is designed for graduates of foreign universities who want to study for a master’s degree in the UK in their speciality or wish to change direction.
The system for assessing the knowledge of schoolchildren and students in the UK is significantly different from ours and is more flexible. It is a comprehensive approach which, depending on the level of education and region, may include:
When giving marks, teachers and lecturers assess not only knowledge, but also the level of diligence, creative approach, independence, and behaviour.
