How the British education system works: Explained simply for parents

The education system in the United Kingdom is considered one of the best in the world and a benchmark for many countries, including European ones. Its main distinguishing feature is its strict adherence to standards and requirements for the quality of education. It has a clear structure and commitment to traditions, into which innovations are harmoniously integrated. Below is more detailed information about the features of British education, particularly with regard to education for foreign students.

How British schools work and pre-school education

The first thing to know is that the education system in the UK consists of public and private sectors. The vast majority of educational institutions are regulated by the state. However, there are also private day schools and colleges, including international ones, offering various study programmes. Boarding schools are a separate category, including public schools — elite private educational institutions where students are prepared for admission to higher education institutions and subsequent leadership positions at the state level (economy, politics, church, army). In general, the entire education system, regardless of whether it is a private school or a state school, has its own structure. Within this structure, there are clearly defined levels of education in the United Kingdom.
Pre-school education
Almost all British children receive pre-school education in various municipal and private institutions. These can be:

  • nursery schools and classes;
  • day nurseries;
  • playgroups.

These institutions educate children aged from a few months to 5 years. Next comes school education.

Primary education in Britain (Primary School)

This is the first stage of secondary education, covering children aged 5 to 11. This period is also divided into two stages:

  1. From 5 to 7 years old, when learning takes place in a playful manner and in conditions that are as close to home as possible.
  2. From 7 to 11 years old – here children are divided into groups according to their skills and abilities. Group A consists of well-prepared and gifted children, group B includes children with average abilities, and group C includes students with insufficient skills in arithmetic, reading and writing.

Any British school for children at the primary level provides instruction in the core subjects. Initially, these are English, mathematics and literature. A little later, natural sciences, technology and humanities are added – a total of about ten subjects. However, the main focus of primary school education is on general personal development and communication skills, as well as sports.

Secondary school in the United Kingdom (Secondary School)

Children aged 11 to 16 attend secondary school. This period also consists of two stages, but the goal of each is to prepare for exams:

  1. From 11 to 14 years old. Students receive a general education, which includes about 10 new subjects, as well as career guidance classes that lay the foundation for determining their future profession. Children complete this stage by taking the Common Entrance Examination.
  2. From 14 to 16 years old. During these years, the focus is on preparing for the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) – a certificate of complete secondary education.

After completing secondary school, students have the right to choose their next path. This can be employment, vocational training (college) or preparation for higher education.

The structure of British education after secondary school, or what is Further Education

All education that students receive after completing secondary school is called Further Education. This includes vocational training in colleges, preparatory programmes for admission to higher education institutions and direct higher education (bachelor’s, master’s, postgraduate, MBA programmes), as well as postgraduate education.

A-Level: what is it in practice?

This is a preparatory educational programme that involves studying several specialised subjects (usually 3-4) that are necessary for further study at a university in the desired profession. The programme lasts 2 years (from 16 to 18 years old). Based on their exam results, students are eligible to apply to universities not only in the United Kingdom, but also in many other countries. Moreover, passing A-Level is mandatory for foreign applicants who wish to study at universities in the United Kingdom, as well as for anyone planning to enter Oxford, Cambridge or a medical university.

When it comes to international education formats, it is also worth mentioning preparatory programmes such as:

  • International Baccalaureate (IB). This is a more complex programme that includes a theoretical component, scientific work and volunteer activities. As part of this programme, students study three subjects at a standard level and three more at an advanced level.
  • Foundation. A preparatory programme for international students, designed to last one year. It can be taken at special preparatory colleges or at a specific university.
  • International Year One. This is a special bachelor’s programme that combines general training with the first year of university study in a specific speciality. Upon successful completion, students can immediately enter the second year of higher education.

It is important to note that the first qualification opens the door to universities around the world, while the second and third are designed for foreign students to obtain higher education directly in the UK.

Higher and postgraduate education

Higher education in the UK can be obtained at the following levels:

  • Bachelor’s degree. The programme usually lasts 3 years (or 4 in Scotland).
  • Master’s degree. These programmes are classified as Postgraduate Education and last from 1 to 2 years.
  • PhD. Research work within PhD programmes involves writing a dissertation and obtaining a doctoral degree. Duration: 3–4 years.

There are also MBA (Master of Business Administration) programmes with various formats, from intensive to distance learning. They are designed to train international-level specialists for management positions in various fields (finance, marketing, business, etc.).

It is also important for foreign applicants to note that passing the UKVI IELTS international exam to confirm a high level of English proficiency is a prerequisite for admission to a UK university. You can also improve your knowledge through special programmes lasting from 1 month to 1 year, such as Pre-Masters, English for Postgraduate Study or Pre-Sessional (for those who have already been admitted to a university but have not confirmed a sufficient level of English).

There are also programmes such as Diploma and Graduate Diploma. The first allows you to transfer to a British university after the first year of a Ukrainian university and continue your studies in the next year. The second is designed for graduates of foreign universities who want to study for a master’s degree in the UK in their speciality or wish to change direction.

The British assessment system and its features

The system for assessing the knowledge of schoolchildren and students in the UK is significantly different from ours and is more flexible. It is a comprehensive approach which, depending on the level of education and region, may include:

  • a numerical scale (9–1);
  • letter grades (A–G or U for the lowest results);
  • levels of difficulty for exams (Higher, Intermediate, Foundation);
  • percentages and points for assessing students’ work.

When giving marks, teachers and lecturers assess not only knowledge, but also the level of diligence, creative approach, independence, and behaviour.

Our private school in Kyiv is a place where the advantages of the British education system are combined with the Ukrainian indomitable spirit and desire to give the best to Ukrainian children in their native land. It is a new model of the school of the future, which opens the doors to the best universities around the world for its graduates.

In cooperation with the British International Schools Council, BISU offers various programmes and levels of education, including primary, lower secondary and upper secondary education, as well as bachelor’s degrees. Our students can also study under the Ukrainian education programme, which is implemented in particular through online learning. Your children can receive a quality education not only in the capital — a private school in Dnipro also opens its doors and invites them to study, explore the world and unlock their potential in a friendly community.
