The 2020-2021 academic year was designated by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine as ‘The Year of Mathematics in Ukraine’, and in this regard the Kyiv Youth Academy of Sciences has invited students to participate in the ‘Outstanding Mathematicians’ competition. Of course, the BISU accepted this challenge!
As part of the first round, BISU students of Year 9 and Year 10 familiarised themselves with the biography and discoveries of a famous mathematician. In accordance with the conditions of the competition, the most significant moments of the life and work of this person were encoded with various ciphers (Caesar code, rectangular coordinate system on the plane, geographical coordinates, pigpen cipher, ASCII binary code). A 3D model cube was designed with encoded information contained in its faces. It was quite challenging since the cube had to be small, with an edge of only 7 cm but the students, with great ingenuity, made it work!
With the help of a 3D printer, the idea was made into a reality and the puzzle cube was printed. Brilliant work! We are all now looking forward to the next round of the competition.
