18 students of the British International School Ukraine last Friday participated in the annual Cross Country competition organised by Kyiv School Sports League and competed with students from other international schools in Kyiv. At the end of the day our students took home two silver medals and one gold medal.
The event took place at the Holosiivsykyi National Nature Park. Students from Years 7-9 ran 2.5 km while Year 10-11 students challenged themselves on the 3.5 km distance. Runners who finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their division were awarded medals. Males and females ran together but competed for placings separately.
Oles from Year 7 came to the finish line second among the boys from the middle school division and secured the first silver medal for the British International School Ukraine. Kristina from Year 8 who competed in the middle school girls division, also won her silver medal having come to the finish only 11 seconds behind the winner of the race. In the high school boys division, Bobak from Year 10 was a definite leader and finished the race with almost half a minute lead which secured him first place and a gold medal for the British International School Ukraine.
Taking part in competitions provides students with an opportunity to challenge themselves, to set targets, to support each other and to know the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. They develop sportsmanship and learn how to accept failure and show determination. Students compete against other schools so they mix with other international students which is important for developing global minded citizens.
