Real-Life Stories

Mr Alex
Mr Alex
(UK), Year 2-3 class on-site teacher, Kyiv, staying with BISU since September 2020

The main solace I take from my experience is that by being here I am offering continuity, emotional security, and stability to the children I am working with, and to those who have grown up with me as their teacher during my time at BISU. I think that counts for a lot, and perhaps makes up for what we are missing academically. My little class have built up a great deal of trust and honesty between ourselves. We talk about how we feel, and we are supporting each other.

Working in Ukraine has been one of the most rewarding roles in my teaching career. The resilience of the students, parents and staff is beyond anything I have ever seen. Many people have asked why I continue to live and work in Kyiv while a war is going on. My answer is simple: if young children can go to school in Ukraine every day, so can I.  Normal life continues here in Kyiv and Dnipro and many expats have returned and are living here. It’s a wonderful city with amazing people. I am not leaving anytime soon.

Ukraine is protecting Europe, and for all who value a civilised world, from Russia’s grotesque barbarism. I have never been a soldier, unfortunately, but I can make a contribution to your noble fight by helping Ukrainian children to speak English as fluently as possible. There are many different ways of helping Ukraine and any teacher or volunteer can make their vital difference. I would encourage them all to come.
